My garden is bursting its seams, literally. The plants are growing so large, they’re overlapping each other. Everything seems to be quite happy, except the last little tomato plant, which is being overshadowed by the cucumber. All this is in only an 8×8 space. I wanted to start small because of my lack of gardening experience–now I find myself wishing I’d planned a larger garden. But, this garden is manageable, and I am already telling myself I can do a bigger one next year.
I’ve harvested about a dozen cocozelle so far–and they’ve been delicious! I love them grilled and steamed…an easy and quick shortcut is to simply slice them up, drizzle with olive oil, add a little fresh ground pepper and chopped garlic, cover and nuke for about 2 minutes.
The eggplant and cucumber both have beautiful flowers, and there are about a dozen baby cukes at last count. They’re not quite ready to harvest–but my mouth is already watering at the prospect of tzatziki and greek salads. Still no tomatoes, either. There’s one small bell pepper that’s almost ready–but it’s still too small to pick.
I had to add a beautiful-looking watermelon, too. I don’t even like watermelon, but the name is “moon and stars” and it has a dark green skin with yellow splotches. I purchased it at Talini’s in a 4″ pot–and in just a couple of weeks it has grown phenomenally (one vine is nearly 3 feet long).
Several ladybugs have taken up residence, and a gigantic bumblebee seems to have adopted the eggplant.
I love going out there every morning to check on the plants and see what is ready (or almost ready) to pick. The garden puts out a smell that I can only describe as “wholesome”–the fragrances of the plants make me feel like I’m out in the country. The tomato plants, even without fruit, smell good enough to eat.
Why didn’t I do this sooner?
